In recent years, Real Madrid have become famous for signing some of the world's best (and most expensive) footballers, and the club has taken the new nickname of Los Galácticos. This trend in buying the world's top players began shortly after EURO 2000. It started with the world record 60M euro signing of Portuguese star Luis Figo, stealing him from FC Barcelona. Figo had risen to prominence with some great plays in the UEFA EURO, and became the center and captain for the team. The following year Real Madrid signed two-time FIFA World Player of the Year Zinedine Zidane who came from Juventus for another world record fee - about 77M euros. Next season, the club purchased Ronaldo, top scorer in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, for around €39m from Inter Milan, and after that followed David Beckham and Michael Owen from the English Premiership.
Real Madrid are affectionately referred to as Los Madridistas or Los Galacticos and are the dominant team in the great Madrid area of Spain. FIFA has been quoted as stating that Real Madrid is the world's most successful football club in modern times. Real Madrid's home stadium is called the Santiago Bernabéu and is situated in northern Madrid in Chamartín. The Bernabéu is a huge stadium and holds over 85,000 enthusiastic supporters - just a small portion of the club's international fans. People all over the world wish to visit the amazing and feel the magic that takes place every time Real Madrid steps into the field.
