Deisler injured in warm-up game

Sebastian Deisler germany world cup Germany midfielder Sebastian Deisler's World Cup hopes suffered a blow when he hurt his troublesome right knee in his side's 6-2 thrashing of Austria on Saturday.

The triple world champions, who have been persistently hit by injury worries in their build-up to the finals in South Korea and Japan this month, were leading 1-0 in their final warm-up when the 22-year-old had to be substituted.

Deisler, who had only recently returned from a long injury break, clashed with Austrian striker Rolf Landerl 20 minutes into the game. He held his right knee and covered his face with his hands as he was carried off on a stretcher.

The 22-year-old Hertha Berlin player, who will play for Bayern Munich next season, was immediately taken to a nearby hospital to be examined.

'All we know is that nothing's torn and nothing's broken but he's in a lot of pain,' Germany coach Rudi Voeller said after the match.

'We have to wait to find out exactly how serious the injury is and we can only hope that it's not too bad.'

Deisler, whose creative skills play a key role in Voeller's plans, remained sidelined for months after undergoing surgery on his right knee last October.

He now has very little time to recover before the World Cup starts on May 31
