Deschamps sees France keeping crown

France's 1998 World Cup-winning captain Didier Deschamps believes the title holders will keep their crown in the 2002 finals in South Korea and Japan.
'By their consistency and their sparkling team spirit, Les Bleus seem to me a little bit above the rest,' Deschamps told French daily Le Parisien on Thursday.
'I see France world champions. The last four should also feature solid nations like Italy, Argentina, Spain, England and Brazil,' he added.

Deschamps retired from international soccer after leading France to victory at Euro 2000 and put an end to his playing career last season to become Monaco coach.
He said he believed France had improved up front in the last four years with strikers like Arsenal's Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet of Juventus reaching maturity.
'France's striking potential is better. One has rarely seen such a wealth up front. Some players won't be (picked for the World Cup finals) when they would have made other teams happy,' he said.
Deschamps, who won record 103 caps for France, said the opening game against Senegal would be the most important for the French.
'The trickiest game will be against Senegal. The opening match sets the pace. Then, without being in the last 16 yet, (if you win) you've taken a great step and you can change the team in the third (group) game,' he said. |
